If you’re living off the grid, or just enjoy a fire oven baked foods, an outdoor pizza oven is a fantastic way to quickly cook food while using no electricity. Of course you can make pizza, bread, and other baked goods, and you can also use it as a grill for meats or operate it at a lower temperature for baking casserole-type dishes. The trouble is that it can be very expensive to have an outdoor oven installed. Luckily, there is a step-by-step tutorial on The Year of Mud that shows you how to build one of your own!

This design is for a cob oven, which uses an ingenious technique of combining clay, sand, straw and water to create a durable, highly insulated cooking dome. These supplies are easy to come by, and the base can be created using re-purposed materials. A bit more planning might be required than simply hiring someone else to build the oven, but you can’t beat homemade pizza plus bragging rights!
