When you’re homesteading and starting from scratch, there sure are a lot of expenses! You might have a home to build, a garden to establish, and livestock to buy in order to get the operation going. If you have livestock to wrangle and a garden to protect, you will definitely need some sort of fence, which can be super expensive depending on the size of your property. In this case, re-purposing materials can be a much better option than store-bought fencing supplies, and this tutorial on Morning Chores shows how to do just that!
Using pallet slats, you can build a sturdy, economical fence in no time! Not only are pallets cheap (and sometimes free) they are easy to disassemble and the slats are already uniform in length and thickness. My favorite method for a quick, no-fuss setup is to use the pallets when they are intact! This way, it’s easy to reconfigure the fence as your homestead grows. Of course, there are awesome designs that require taking the pallets apart, but this way you can let your creativity fly!
Always remember to use heat treated (HT) pallets and avoid the nasty chemicals that can be used to treat pallets. Learn more about pallet safety here.
