There is no denying that food is getting more and more expensive, especially if you want to eat anything resembling healthy food. Meat alone has seen price hikes by well over 60% in the last 4-5 years and people are feeling the strain in their pocketbooks. More and more people are having to get food assistance through either the food stamp program or local food banks than ever before. What is a person raising a family supposed to do? You want to feed your kids healthy food but it is cheaper to buy macaroni and cheese instead of all the fixings for a salad!
Consider a system where you buy meat only two or three times a year, use vegetable scraps to make stock from, and cut down how much food you throw away by over half. Processing food or preserving it using a different method other than freezing can really make your food dollars stretch out.
For example, buying meat in bulk during large meat sales is a great way to save a lot of money. If you cut down the roasts into steaks, stew or fajita meat, and then vacuum seal it into family sized portions, you will very rarely throw away any food from freezer burn! One lady has a system all in place and shares it with everyone who is willing to learn. Cut the waste!
