Slow cooking without electricity has been around for hundreds of years, it’s only because we are all spoiled and so used to living modern we forget that you can cook a fantastic meal with no power in hay boxes, wonderbags and other wonderful old school methods.
I found a great article that shows us how to build our own Hay boxes, wonderbags and other cool ways to cook with no electricity. My favorite is by far the hay box, I have never heard of one before today. I feel stupid that I didn’t know this method existed but when you break it down into simple physics, it makes sense.
Hay boxes and other insulated cookers are like rain barrels in the sense that they all contain just a few basic elements: in this case, a container and an insulating material (which doesn’t have to be hay). So, you could simply use a cooler and a quilt. When you think outside the box you can accomplish quite a bit and thrive without power. Check out how to build these and learn more about them below 🙂
