Sugardine – A Cheap Homemade Antiseptic - Sugardine is a common treatment method for horses when it comes to dealing with laminitis, thrush, abscesses and wounds. It’s an efficient method because it draws out infection, improves drainage and it doesn’t damage existing healthy tissue. In fact, it is a method that promotes healthy tissue growth.

I first heard about Sugardine from my grandpa and I’ve seen him use it many times on the farm. This homemade antiseptic was used every time he needed to prevent and kill infections on his animals. Although it was his primary method to treat abscesses and thrush on the hooves of horses, it was also effective for him and his family.

Sugardine is an antiseptic made from sugar and iodine. Preppers and survivalists love this homemade antiseptic because it’s cheap and easy to make. It’s an efficient healing method since it draws out infection from wounds, improves drainage and it doesn’t damage existing healthy tissue. In fact, it is a method that promotes healthy tissue growth.

Just like Dakin’s solution, this is one of the antispetics you should learn how to make because it will become invaluable when medical aid is not available. Sugardine works really well, and science proved that its antibacterial properties are effective on humans as well. A five year study was published in the Southern Medical Journal in 1981 and it stated the following: “”The use of sugardine seems to accelerate granulation tissue and epithelial tissue production, thereby covering wounds, burns or ulcers with skin.”

Topical application of sugardine stimulates wound healing by activating keratinocytes and firbroblast functions. Besides having an anti-microbial effect it promotes re-epithelialization and granulation tissue formation.
